Goal(s)

Improve the horse’s responsiveness, balance, and engagement through precise transitions and ground poles.

Process

Step 1:
• Begin the exercise directly at the trot, on a straight line.
• Perform several trot to walk transitions between the markers.
Step 2:
• Repeat the same pattern, but this time include trot to halt to walk transitions.
• Continue to use the markers as reference points for each transition.
Step 3:
• Follow the same track, but after the first halt, ask for one or two steps of rein back, then move off at the trot again.
Step 4:
• This time, start at the trot, include walk, halt, and rein back transitions according to the pattern.
• Finish with a trot to canter transition between the red markers at the end of the line. (You may also ask for a walk transition between the two markers, then pick up the canter afterwards) - This exercise can be performed on both reins.

Difficulties

Be precise in your aids to keep the horse attentive.
