Goal(s)
Learning the sliding stop in western riding
Process
Pick up a collected lope on the rail, either left or right lead. Ride a diagonal (across the arena) and ask for a stop before the pole of the 'U'. Immediately back the horse up until you reach the outside of the U. Perform a pivot and exit the U through the entrance. Purpose of the exercise: teach the horse to engage the hindquarters, as a foundation for reining. Option to work at the jog before starting the exercise.
Difficulties
Precise stop on the hindquarters
