Desensitization and Control

Accustom the horse to various types of footing, by adding increasing levels of difficulty.
A tarp or other items such as gym mats (anything that might surprise the horse is welcome) should be laid out on the ground, framed by two ground poles at the entrance, with a small slalom at the exit. You can then repeat the exercise by backing up, at liberty, or even under saddle if your horse is comfortable.
The horse must trust you, as a change in footing can quickly startle them.
