Goal(s)

To obtain a horse that halts promptly and in balance, steps back straight and lightly, and moves off into trot again without delay.
Engagement + control + strengthening
Muscles targeted:
Abdominals → major work (halt + rein-back)
Hindquarters → engagement under the body
Back → lifts and stabilises
Overall balance

Process

Forward, active trot → horse straight and relaxed
Prompt halt → no shuffling, balanced
Rein-back 2 to 4 steps → slow, straight
Move directly back into trot → clear, forward transition without hesitation
Repeat 4 to 6 times. Always prioritise calmness + accuracy

Difficulties

Halt not prompt → the horse takes several small steps before actually halting
Rein-back difficult → does not step back, or backs crooked / too fast
Lack of engagement → horse on the forehand, not in balance
Dull transition to trot → moves off slowly or hesitates
Horse rushing → goes too fast, loss of control
